    EP BRADLOW HUMAN RIGHTS LLM RESEARCH BURSARY

    Bursary description

    Applications are invited for the above bursary in the amount of not less than R185 000 per year for a two year period. This bursary is awarded for an LLM degree by research thesis at the University of Stellenbosch in human rights law. The thesis will be conducted under the supervision of Prof Sandra Liebenberg, H.F.
    Oppenheimer Professor of Human Rights Law, University of Stellenbosch.

    Requirements and eligibility

    The conditions of the bursary are as follows:
    • The student is resident in South Africa and holds an LLB degree or will have successfully completed their studies for the LLB degree by the beginning of the year for which the scholarship is awarded;
    • The successful applicant is required to take up residence in Stellenbosch for the duration of the abovementioned LLM degree, which must be completed within two years;
    • The candidate is subject to the normal conditions applicable to a research LLM degree in the Faculty of Law. The Faculty’s postgraduate guide is available here: https://blogs.sun.ac.za/law/files/2021/03/Postgraduate-Guide2021.pdf;
    • The successful candidate must acknowledge the support of the Bradlow’s Foundation in their LLM thesis, and provide a copy of the thesis to the Foundation;
    • The bursary will only become payable once the candidate has been successfully registered for LLM studies in the Faculty of Law, University of Stellenbosch. Details of the registration process can be obtained here:

    • The successful candidate will form part of the postgraduate group under the auspices of the HF Oppenheimer Chair in Human Rights Law and is expected to participate in the activities of this group, and provide support to the Chair in
    furthering its objectives.

    How to apply

    Documents to be provided in support of the application:
    1. A covering letter, indicating that the applicant is applying for the Bradlow’s Foundation LLM Research Bursary, confirming that they accept the abovementioned bursary conditions, and setting out a general motivation for
    their application, including the nature and extent of their interest, knowledge and record of involvement in human rights;
    2. A full curriculum vitae, including names and full contact details of two contactable referees;
    3. A certified copy of Matriculation Certificate;
    4. A certified copy of the applicant’s academic record to date, including the first semester of the year of application;
    5. A written testimonial from a lecturer who has taught the candidate in their LLB degree;
    6. A description (not exceeding 2000 words) of their proposed LLM thesis, including a motivation for its general relevance, and significance to the advancement of human rights research.
