Requirements and eligibility
To be eligible for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program in South Africa, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Be a citizen of South Africa or a permanent resident with at least five years of permanent residency status in South Africa. Please note that South African nationals with dual citizenship from the United States are not eligible for the program.
Hold one of the following academic degrees:
For Visiting Student Researcher: Be registered for a PhD at a South African university at the time of application (May 1, 2023) and still be registered at the time of commencing research in the United States (August 2024).
For a Master's degree: Hold a 4-year Bachelor's degree, BTech degree, or a 3-year Bachelor's degree with an Honors degree.
For a Doctorate degree: Hold a Master's degree.

How to apply
If you are interested in applying for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, please follow these steps:
Go to the program's website at apply.iie.org/ffsp2024 and complete the online application form.
Only online applications will be accepted. Specific instructions for South African applicants can be found on the website.
Note that the selection process for the program can be lengthy. If you are shortlisted for the program, you will be required to participate in an interview.
Applicants who are invited to take part in the selection process may also be required to attend a half-day workshop on the process, which is by invitation only.
Additionally, successful applicants may be invited to attend a two-day GRE preparation workshop.
