The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of South Africa Limited was established in 1940 under the Industrial Development Corporation Act, 22 of 1940, as a government-owned entity. The IDC operates in alignment with national policy directives outlined in key documents such as the National Development Plan (NDP), Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP), and various industry Master Plans.
The primary mission of the IDC is to maximise its impact on development by promoting job-intensive industrialisation. It also seeks to contribute to an inclusive economy by providing funding to black-owned and empowered businesses, black industrialists, enterprises led by women and youth and other empowered entities.
In addition to fulfilling its developmental role, the IDC is committed to ensuring its own long-term sustainability. This involves responsible management of financial and human resources, environmental stewardship and positioning itself as a leading institution for development finance.
