About this Bursary

Historically, the SAMA Bursary is offering a R20 000 per year to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are studying or have an interest in studying in the medical field (MB ChB / MB BCh). The South African Medical Association (SAMA) is a non-profit organisation that represents private and public sector medical practitioners. Currently there are no bursaries offered by SAMA. Please read a message obtained from the SAMA website : " Dear Bursary- and Scholarship - candidates As you might be aware, SAMA is a non-profit company which depends on sponsorships and donations to be able to provide the medical student bursaries and scholarships for PhD and Research Masters students. Due to the unfortunate economic climate emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many of our stakeholders and donors failed to make sufficient financial commitments. The SAMA Board reviewed the request for funding from the EST on 28 November 2020 and decided that no new bursaries or scholarships will be granted in 2021. SAMA is therefore NOT able to process any new bursaries and scholarships for 2021. Our marketing and Communications Department have embarked on a marketing drive to secure funding for bursaries and scholarships so that normal operations may resume as soon as possible. Please be assured that we are trying our utmost to reinstate the bursaries and scholarships as soon as possible and we will continue to honor current recipients of undergraduate bursaries and postgraduate scholarships. This is an unfortunate situation affecting the South African and global economy. SAMA remains committed in supporting medical students and promoting academic medicine and research. "
