    Bursary description

    The SAMA Bursary is offering a R20 000 per year to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are studying or have an interest in studying in the medical field (MB ChB / MB BCh). The South African Medical Association (SAMA) is a non-profit organisation that represents private and public sector medical practitioners.

    Requirements and eligibility

    Potential applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • South African citizen
    • Completed Matric
    • Currently studying towards a Medical qualification (1st to 4th year of study) at a recognised South African university
    • Proven financial need

    *Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged groups

    How to apply

    Students straight out of matric and applying to university for the first time must meet entrance requirements of the chosen institution. Students in their 2nd and 3rd must download and complete the SAMA Bursary Application Form (pdf).

    The form can also be downloaded online here OR can be requested by emailing: graceb@samedical.org / karlienp@samedical.org .

    The following documentation must be submitted with a completed application form.

    • Certified copy of ID document/ passport/ birth certificate/ citizenship certificate
    • Applicants full name, contact details and residential address
    • CV (stating education and volunteer experience) to a maximum of 2 pages
    • Two most recent reports
    • Proof of financial circumstances (certified copy)
    • Letter of acceptance into medical program and South African medical school (can be submitted after application form)
    • Completed SAMA Bursary Confidential Report form.
