The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) came into being in December 2010, but South Africa’s involvement with space research and activities started many decades earlier with helping early international space efforts in the second half of the 20th century, and observing the Earth’s magnetic field at stations around Southern Africa.
The SANSA bursary programme offers funding for a wide range of study options related to space. Ideally the programme is looking for applicants who are passionate about space and research. Individuals who are academically talented and enjoy challenges are encouraged to apply.
For the 2021 academic year successful applicants will receive bursaries with values as stated below:
Hons – R85 000 (one year).
Masters – R100 000 per year for two years.
PhD – R130 000 per year for three years.
Requirements and eligibility
Please note that previously disadvantaged learners will get preference. All applicants need to meet the following criteria to apply:
be a South African citizen
hold a valid ID documentation
hold a valid Matric
hold a degree or diploma with a minimum average of 65%
must be accepted or meet the requirements for acceptance at an Institute of Higher Learning
must have a valid e-mail address
must be registered or intending to register between the months of March and September
must have a proposal ready
